I started attending martial arts class when I was about 15 years old…My martial Arts training started under Master Rick Ross, Who taught the art of Isshin Ryu and Goju. This art was derived by Master Tat Sue Shymabuku. Our primary weapon was the Bo Staff. We also studied Sai and Tongfas. I earned my first black belt in Master Ross’s Class. This is the black belt I’m most proud of.

During my stay at Master Ross’s class there was a Tae Kwon do Instructor. Once a week he taught us kicking technique’s… It’s not that Ryu schools do not kick. But they rarely kick above the waist and at that time spinning heel kicks in a Ryu school were not heard of. Once I received my black belt I moved over 30 miles away and could not attend Master Ross’s school anymore. I found American Kenpo, Ed Parker’s American Kenpo. I stayed in that school for awhile, long enough to receive a purple belt. At that time I decided to move to South Carolina with my family.

While in South Carolina I took Taw Kwon Do classes for three years and received a Black Belt in Master Kenny Bradshaw’s school of Taw Kwon Do. Master Kenny Bradshaw made my flexibility what it is. He taught great stretching techniques and enhanced my kicking ability.

I have since moved to Virginia. During my stay I have kept busy in the Martial Arts world. I obtained different belts in various different schools. I have untainted a Bo Dan in Traditional Tang Su Do under Master Frank Clay. While at Master Frank Clay’s class we studied a lot of Hipkido and self defense.

At the same time I studied hoshon ryu under Master Steve Woodward.  Where I received a black belt.  There after, attending Grand master Dongs school. And receiving a second degree in ta kwon do. Although I love the fact that I am a second Dan I have learned that there is so much more to learn and that my quest to be better is far from over.

I find the more I help others reveal their inner strength mine grows stronger. My goals for all I teach are simple

  • Self Confidence through knowledge, hard work, and constant reassurance.

  • Focus through discipline and repetition

  • A found respect for all living things through constant reminding that we are all created equal.

  • And finally a sense of awareness through the combination of everything stated in this summary.

  • Strength and Honor to all who believe in themselves.

Instructors Strengthens This is our first class and the instructor is very motivated and willing to teach every child in his class. He seems to extremely care about the welfare of the children and teaching them the skills they will need if challenged with problems.

Comments  I am going to keep my child in the self defense program until she's complete (black belt) or otherwise she get's to a point she doesn't want to do it anymore. She's also into dance but loves karate so I don't think that she'll be going anywhere

Instructors Strengths    Mr. Singler is wonderful. He is very enthusiastic about what he does. He cares about all the students. He has strong feelings about these kids understanding WHY they are learning this self defense. I am very happy that he is my boys instructor this year. I think they are learning more than they did before.

Instructors Areas to Improve On    I can't see where Mr. Singler needs to improve. He knows what he is doing and the students respect him.

Comments    I recommend self defense to anyone. We can all stand to know how to defend ourselves. AIM is a great program.

Child Enjoy Most   Least    My oldest son enjoys the challenges he has to meet. He feels mentally and physically stronger because of Mr. Singler's class and the individual attention he gives each student.
Changes     I noticed changes in my sons when they first began the program in Norfolk. My oldest is now a purple belt and the youngest is an orange belt.

Comments    This is our first year with both kids in self-defense.  I think it's a great program!  Kevin is a very caring person and teaches these kids as if they were his own (he has quite a few of them too!) He takes the time to talk to every parent wanting to express their concerns with their child. The girls are learning to defend themselves in all different situations and the discipline they need to become outstanding adults.  Our family is looking forward to our upcoming summer and fall sessions with Kevin.
Kevin - thank you for all you do!

Comments    Kevin Singler has only been at the west end civic center a few weeks and has already won me over. He is the best instructor this organization has gotten at this location is some time. Please stay!

Recommendations   Do what ever to keep Kevin Singler at this site.

Child Enjoy Most   Least    My daughter is quiet and somewhat shy, and I never thought she would make it this far in the class. She has stuck it out with bad instructors. She likes  the confidence the class gives her. On the other hand, my son dropped out of the class due to the poor instructor that was at the west end site because he would bark at the kids instead of showing the kids the proper moves.

Changes     My child has a little more self-confidence then before and hopefully with the new instructor, this will grow in leaps and bounds.

Comments   It has been great watching my son grow and become more confident. I truly believe that instructor Kevin has had a lot to do with how well my son is feeling about himself. This has been a very positive experience and I am so pleased I've found "AIM". Especially with our current instructor. He is firm yet positive. He creates a great energy and the children seem to pick up on the "vibe". Also, he hasn't lost his sense of humor. Thank you AIM for providing us with such a wonderful instructor we couldn't have asked for anything more.
